The maximum vehicle height is 2 metres, and the weight limit is 2 tonnes. The width restriction is 2 metres (or 6'6").
Drivers of goods vehicles, including vans, should use Tower Bridge or the Blackwall Tunnel, both of which are outside the Congestion Charging zone. Goods vehicles that do not meet the restrictions are not allowed to use Rotherhithe Tunnel.
The Rotherhithe Tunnel was built in 1908 and was not designed to cope with modern levels of traffic. Until recently it was thought that the ventilation system would not need major repairs for a number of years. Recent analysis has shown that repair work needs to be carried out urgently.
Gareth Powell, TfL's managing director of surface transport, says: 'Safety is our top priority and this closure and changes to the vehicles allowed in the tunnel is absolutely necessary to ensure the tunnel's future.'
